Philanthropy and medical provider join forces to support students pursuing healthcare careers

Nine Northern NM Students receive Anchorum Health Foundation/CHRISTUS St.Vincent Scholarship via the LANL Foundation’s Scholarship Program

ESPAÑOLA, SANTA FE, NM – Nine high school and college students from across Northern New Mexico are one step closer to achieving their dream of becoming healthcare professionals thanks to a partnership between the LANL Foundation, the Anchorum Health Foundation, and CHRISTUS St. Vincent.

Nine awardees will receive a combined $71,000 as part of the LANL Foundation’s Four-Year Scholarship Program to pursue a healthcare-related degree at a New Mexico college or university this fall. An additional student will receive $3,000 to pursue an associate degree in diagnostic medical sonography via the Foundation’s Career Pathways Scholarship Program.

“We are incredibly proud to support these outstanding students as they take the next step toward careers in healthcare,” said Jerry Jones, President and CEO of the Anchorum Health Foundation. “Building a homegrown workforce is essential to meeting the needs of our communities in northern New Mexico, and these scholars represent the future of community-rooted care.”

Originally established to support graduates of the Capital High School Medical Pathways Program pursuing healthcare degrees, the scholarship is now open to students across seven Northern New Mexico counties with the aim of increasing the number of skilled healthcare workers in New Mexico. In 2020, the LANL Foundation began awarding and administering the Medical Pathways Scholarship on behalf of the funders. Since that time, over $380,000 has been awarded to 64 students.

“We are deeply grateful for the generous and ongoing contributions of our partners at Anchorum and CHRISTUS St. Vincent in support of Northern New Mexico students and are proud to offer targeted scholarship opportunities that support students’ career goals and the needs of our communities,” said LANL Foundation President and CEO Gwen Perea Warniment. “Pairing career-connected learning with direct financial support via scholarships is a powerful way the LANL Foundation and our partners can align funding and mission for the greatest possible impact.”

“Providing financial support to students pursuing healthcare careers is a valuable tool as we work to fulfill a critical need for caregivers in our community,” said Lillian Montoya, President & CEO of CHRISTUS St. Vincent. “CHRISTUS St. Vincent is dedicated to building and developing a local pipeline that is committed to serving our North Central New Mexico patients and their families.”
